Coaches

Coach-Anton

Anton Popov

Personal Trainer

Anton is a lifelong athlete and student. He started at the age of six in karate and never stopped with sports. The discipline and commitment learned there are carried through to every sport he picks up. He understands that physicality is only one part of being an athlete and that you need to tend to the mind to take full advantage of your talents.
He believes that we need to become good athletes first, and only then we may become great players. The multitude of athletic skills like spatial awareness, predictive capacity, creativity, and passion for movement expands our abilities, and drives our growth.
In pursuing the best strategies and techniques to develop the above unique skills in any athlete, he amassed over 20 different certifications like Olympic lifting, Visual and Vestibular training, Conditioning, and many others. He constantly finetunes his approach to make a unique optimal blend of training and skill acquisition to reach the desired performance.
He feels that every athlete deserves to be supported on their journey to higher achievements; however, it is up to them to put in the hard work and practice that coaches offer.

Coach-Davide

David Manice

Personal Trainer

Athletics have been a big part of Davide’s life since he was able to walk. He excelled at soccer, track and field, and Ultimate Frisbee, and they dominated his younger years until his early twenties. He understood early in his athletic career that the top athletes possessed, among other traits, three primary attributes: they are willing to put in the effort, they are coachable, and they are hungry for success. Davide has been in the fitness field for almost two decades and these attributes are what he desires to promote within his athletes.

Davide believes that for him to be a great coach, he needs to be coachable. He is a lifelong student, always learning new strategies and refining his approach to encourage and challenge himself and those under his guidance. Through the many certifications, workshops, events, and alternative learning that he has absorbed, he is confident in providing an engaging atmosphere and choosing the appropriate stimulus to bring out the best in his athletes.

Jasnoor Verma

Education Ambassador

Basketball has always and will always run in my veins! Since basketball has been a part of my life from my early childhood, I know first-hand the positive impacts that playing with a team can have on your personal and professional growth, which is why I am committed to paying my due forward as your academic advisor with Shield!

As an Emergency department volunteer at the Etobicoke General Hospital, not only do I help staff with the tasks they have, but I also learn how to make every visitors’ experience as comfortable as I can. Along with this, I am also a Kids Help Phone Crisis Responder. Every week, I actively engage with youth all over Canada that require both mental and emotional aid or just need someone to talk to.

Even though I am passionate about many activities, I am super excited to become one of your mentors with Shield

Coach Kareem Granger 01

Kareem Granger

Coach/ Mentor

Like a lot of things in life, my role in the basketball landscape of Canada is mostly by accident, unless one believes in fate. It started with a passion to play; although I never played basketball at any high level, I did spend most afternoons, evenings and nights of my young adult life on the blacktop. That passion was transferred to my daughter who would watch me play when she was small, and thus the passion for recreational basketball was passed down. Through her, the world of competitive basketball was revealed, and the rest would become history.
If you were to see me on the sidelines, you would understandably think competition was my motivation. However, my true motivation is seeing others, particularly young women, develop in their love of the game. Seeing the work and hours many girls were willing to dedicate, just for a chance to play, persuaded me more. And, the chance to play is a motivation I recognized.
Basketball is a game, and the opportunity to play is what is most important. I started the international Ballerz Club, which broadens girls’ opportunity to play and enjoy the game, like I did all those nights when I was younger.
Partnering with SHIELD was a natural progression as it creates opportunities for all youth, including girls, at different levels. We work tirelessly together, but it’s not work; it’s passion, family, foundation and fun.
